Guest Post: Build a Loyal Audience with These 5 Types of Blog Posts

When new bloggers ask me for tips to build a loyal following with their blogs, I always answer with this: “Imagine visiting your own blog as a reader. What would you expect to find?”

You do not need super powers to keep visitors coming back to your blog. You just have to provide content that is both fun and interesting to read — and share.

Variety is the spice of life, right? Here are five types of posts that will turn your blog into a winner.

Inspirational Stories

People love when bloggers share their own experiences and how they have overcome challenges in their fields. These stories create a lot of engagement, because readers can easily relate to them. Further, they give your blog a unique twist.

With that said, inspirational stories should be short and only used occasionally. You do not want visitors to think you are trying to toot your own horns.

Polls

One of the most important rules to build a loyal audience is to be aware of what people expect to find on your blog.

Polls are really useful when it comes to testing the pulse of your readers and getting to know them better. They are easy to run and will definitely increase engagement.

I have used PollDaddy (http://memarketingservices.com://polldaddy.com/) for a while and really like it. SurveyMonkey and Google Docs also are good options.

News

There is always something newsworthy happening in your niche. Whether it is a contest, product release or giveaway, use your blog to tell the world about it.

Not sure how to get started? Subscribe to Google Alerts and Topsy to receive relevant news around the keywords and topics of your choice. You can also try Twitter Search and press release services like PRLog or PRWeb.

Lists

People love list posts. They are easy to write and fun for people to read for several reasons:

  • They can be about anything relevant to your topics: quotes, questions, jokes, phrases, tips, etc.
  • They usually feature attention-grabbing headlines
  • They are skimmable and save readers precious time
  • They work as great resources that visitors can bookmark for future reference

List posts are among the most-read and shared articles you will find. You can even use them to shine the spotlight on old articles in your blog.

Tutorials

Tutorials are interactive step-by-step sessions that help people learn specific skills. They can be delivered through videos and slideshows, and/or in written form with pictures.

The great thing about tutorials is that they give you a real opportunity to establish yourself as an expert in your niche. And they are also interaction magnets.
